We’re thinking about relocating from Europe and Izmir came up as a potential base. But we’ve got school-aged kids, so I’m wondering if the housing stock here works for families. Space, safety, neighborhoods — what’s the real deal?

We moved here from the Netherlands last year and have two kids, so I can speak from experience. Housing in Izmir is quite family-friendly, especially in areas like Balçova, Karşıyaka, and Narlıdere. You can find large apartments or even duplexes with 3–4 bedrooms, lots of green space nearby, and access to international schools. Our apartment is in a residential complex with a playground, pool, and secure parking — and it’s surprisingly affordable. There are plenty of supermarkets, parks, and clinics around. Public transport is decent too. For long-term living with kids, Izmir checks most of the boxes.
